Emotion is crucial in making a drama appear appealing to the audiences. Emotions connect the otherwise tasteless plot to the actual message that is intended to be conveyed. Chekhov nonetheless used his brilliant storytelling ability to present various facets of human emotion. Through the story of Svetlovidov, we are presented not only with the emotion of regret and rage towards the past, but also with the poetic feels of affection towards the women he loved. Through the subtle words and respectful courtesy of Nikita Ivanich, we finally perceive the emotion of Svetlovidov as that of a person surrendering to the fate of old age.
The first instance of explicit emotion is the extreme rage shown by Svetlovidov. He is drunk and abandoned in the stage . Old age has consumed his abilities and there is no one to care for him. So, the aggression he displays at that moment is quite plausible. The next instance of emotion can be clearly pictured when Svetlovidov remembers how he had fallen in love with a women who only loved him for his acting but posed a condition to change his career if they were to get married. Chekhov has managed to produce a fascinating writing by changing the flow of Svetlovidov's emotion from full of affection and pleasureful reminiscence to hurtful and deserted feelings. The third instance is the emotion of excitement followed by calmness. Svetlovidov becomes excited to know that he is still able to remember the lines from Shakespeare's play and act them to a certain level. But at the end he finally realizes that he is now very old to continue his career in acting. This surrender to the whims of fate brought him calmness.
